For Peter Turcotte, it all started with sports cards. “I was a sports guy,” he notes. “I loved hockey, baseball. I started collecting sports cards and the sports cards just led to everything else. At first, I was a weekend warrior: flea markets, small shows, stuff like that. And eventually, it had to lead to something more productive. So a storefront was the next step.”
And now more than 20 years later, that storefront, known as Big Pete's Collectibles, has everything an eager pop-culture aficionado could want, including comic books, action figures, board and card games, artwork, graphic novels and all manner of affiliated merchandise.
“Sports cards collectors, they pretty much collected anything,” he explains. “So it became, 'Okay, I collect cards, but I also collect 'X'. And so I'd bring that in, and that would lead to a bigger customer base. 'I collect comics, but I also collect games!' So we quickly became really diverse.”
Just a quick trip over the water, Lonsdale’s Big Pete's is a juggernaut of comics content. The North Van shop's front room lets you get your fill on weekly comics arrivals, as well as cosplay-perfect Captain America shirts, batarang key chains and more. The back room is a meeting spot for anyone wanting to talk shop on recent battles or play a game of Magic: The Gathering.
