Ridiculously delicious roti!

I'm a firm believer that hole-in-the-wall restaurants, while they might be a little lacking in service and décor, unquestionably serve the best food. I found Tropikis to be another solid piece of evidence to support my theory. I went for a Friday lunch with some coworkers. The building is nothing special, and the decorations are a bit eccentric... but I was served the most delicious roti I've had in a long while. The beef filling was tender and clearly slow-cooked in simmering spices. I loved the contrast against the slightly crumbly but flavourful chickpea spread that held the roti shell together. I must have been very hungry, as I was one of the only people at my table to finish my portion. It was definitely a generous-sized plate, and easily made two meals for some of my coworkers. The two stars of the show, though, had to be the salad and hot sauce. The delicious salad, made of of mixed greens, candied nuts, tomatoes, and tropical fruit, was served alongside the roti; the freshness and sweetness of it cut the richness of the meal nicely. The homemade scotch bonnet sauce, delivered to the table in squeeze bottles, allowed each member to adjust to their desired level of spice. Unlike a lot of hot sauces that go for the heat but taste terrible, this one was wonderfully balanced... the only criticism would be that the level of heat seemed to vary from bottle to bottle, which resulted in an unpleasant surprise for one of my colleagues who goes light on spice. Overall, though, a fantastic and reasonably priced lunch expedition. It's not a sleek or romantic first-date place by any means, but if you're looking for terrific Trinidadian fare, bring a close friend or loved one and get a taste of the tropics to help you thaw out during the Winnipeg winters!
