I've been eating here periodically since it's opened (see my older review), but I'm disappointed to report that it's been going downhill ever since. In terms of food quality, though, it's certainly not bad, but I think there's a certain tiredness to many of the items. The Pad Thai is lacking brightness: and where's the fresh lime and cilantro? Recent menu entry Pad Zucchini is good, but again, could use more punch. But where has it gone wrong? The service. Oh, the service. It seems that many of the servers just don't care about their customers. Tonight, we must have offended our waitress somehow when we walked in with our smiles and courteous greetings, because for the rest of the meal she seemed to purposely *ignore us*. We were never asked how our meal was, our water glasses never filled up: even worse, the table next to us DID get some attention, but she would walk right by us. Um, hello? Can we have some service? Hello.....? Oh, and the coconut drinks? Mostly ice, and $3.50 each. Delicious, but only a few mouthfuls. Such a shame!
I can sum up the whole review in one word - blah. For some reason I had high expectations for this place, but the food and service were just average. I had pad thai which was rather blend and nothing memorable. My friend had beef curry, which was decent but still lacking in flavor. Our waitress was attentive enough I suppose, but completely indifferent about her customers. When I asked her to give me some suggestions about dishes, she couldn't say anything and made me feel as though I am bothering her.
I've had both take out and dine in meals at My Thai. The take out took a while, but it was a good meal. We had the appetizer assortment, which is a great way to try their appetizers. You order the assortment for either 2 or 4 people and get enough of each appetizer to share with that number of people. My favourite was the coconut shrimp (nice and crispy, not overly battered), but everything was quite good. Eating in was a nice experience, although the service wasn't exemplary. We waited quite a while for our drinks to appear, but the food came fairly quickly. I had the red curry beef, and my partner had the vegetable pad thai. The red curry was nice and spicy. The lime leaf adds a nice flavour as well. There was a nice assortment of vegetables, and it wasn't too heavy. I had a taste of the pad thai, and it was a little bland for me (maybe because I was used to the strong flavour of the curry), but my partner liked it. The atmosphere is...okay. It's not somewhere to go for a fancy date, but it's nice to look out the windows facing King Street and people watch while you're waiting for your food.
Food was good, not exceptional, and was a a little small in size. The restaurant charges for green tea, and that is a problem. Most Thai/Veitnamese restaurants give the tea away. I was already paying a premium for the Lunch, as it should have been under $10 for th portion size that I received, but then I was given a single portion tea pot with no refills, and charged for two teas on the bill. Sloppy on the watiress' part. I could excuse it if she were busy, but in fact there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant at the time. She did appear to be busy, fulfilling take-out orders and phone calls, but that is an excuse. Reality is the service wasn't even close to what is expected. Ordered the Cashew Chicken. It wasn't great. I could make the same at home. The other guest of the restaurant had Pad Thai and enjoyed it.
Saw all the raving reviews about this place, so I decided to try it out. Service was great, but food was just average for me. Portions were quite small. The noodle was average. The coconut soup was way to sweet, as if someone had accidentally dropped a can of sugar in there.
I had a great experience at My Thai. The service was very professional and the food was superb. I loved that the mango chicken I ordered was full of creatively-cut veggies as well as a healthy portion of meat and mangoes. I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes!
In Hamilton, the original My Thai restaurant on James Street has become something of a legend. The best Thai in the city, discovered by locals through word of mouth. I'm happy to say that the Waterloo branch does this Hamiltonian proud. Yvonne and her staff are the friendliest bunch you can find, and their food is just fantastic. I love to come here for the unassuming atmosphere, a laugh-filled chat with the server, and the best Thai in Uptown. The green curry is delish, and my favourite basil sauce has survived spectacularly the transition from Hamilton. And another great thing? It's quick. In a rush for lunch, but still want to go somewhere to sit? Go here.
