Founded in September 2009, Project Space is a gallery nonprofit whose mandate is primarily to present the work of emerging artists and independent curators *. Wishing to encourage new practices and interdisciplinary creating a space conducive to trade, th
Espace Projet's goal is to present the work of the next generation of designers and artists, and to offer them programs to exhibit their art. The gallery hosts theme exhibitions, the occasional solo show, and even Master's degree projects. In order to provide a bit of variety, housewares and furniture designed by Quebecois artists are available for purchase in the gallery's basement boutique.
With the aim of aiding the younger generation, Espace Projet focuses on artists who are just starting out in their careers and have less than 10 years of experience. Each year, the gallery holds two large exhibitions where artists are introduced to the public, who can purchase their work, whether they be prints or graphic design.
Through events such as these Espace Projet increases work opportunities with the neighbourhood and local businesses. "Espace Projet really plays a role in the cultural life of the Villeray district," says Catherine Barnabé, the gallery's head of communications. "We want to make the various practices known locally, nationally and internationally."
