Favourite pizza restaurants in Montreal

Is there a dish more ubiquitous than pizza? There’s a reason October was named National Pizza Month after all. With Montreal’s strong Italian heritage, there is no shortage of options when it comes to pizzerias. Here’s a list of our favourite pie places (you’ll notice we have a preference for the Neapolitan version).

Pizzeria Napoletana

1
189, rue Dante, Montréal, QC H2S 1K1

One of the city’s first pizzerias specializing in thin-crust Neapolitan pies, Napoletana has been a Little Italy landmark for over half a century. The menu lists endless possibilities featuring any topping you can imagine and more. Bonus: It’s also BYOW, so you can pair your pizza with your favourite wine from home.

Pizzeria Magpie

2
16, rue Maguire, Montréal, QC H2T 1B8

Magpie is a casual Mile-End neighborhood pizzeria offering a fun cocktail selection and oysters. Order from the regular list of pizzas or go for the daily special for an unusual but likely to satisfy combination of toppings.

Brigade Pizzeria Napolitaine

3
1428, rue Stanley, Montréal, QC H3A 1P7

Montreal has seen a slew of authentic, Neapolitan-style pizzerias open of late. However, none of them emphasize customization and low pricing the way Brigade does. Start with one of their base pies and top if off with whatever tickles your fancy from Quebec ricotta and Italian provolone to cremini mushrooms and marinated eggplant.

Café Pavé

4
243, rue Notre-Dame O, Montréal, QC H2Y 1T4

A daytime-only sandwiches “and more” joint in Old Montreal, this popular lunch spot also serves salads and killer pizzas. Sometimes they run out of pizza dough, but fret not; ask for your pie made with naan bread instead. You won’t regret it.

Bevo bar + Pizzeria

5
410, rue Saint-Vincent, Montréal, QC H2Y 3A5

BEVO’s Old Port location screams tourist trap, but this trendy pizzeria is anything but. Enjoy delicious antipasti, pizza pies, pastas and a mean braised veal poutine in a fun setting. Do check out the outdoor section in the summer for a charming al fresco dining experience.

Pizzeria Bottega Montréal

6
65, rue Saint-Zotique E, Montréal, QC H2S 1K7

Bottega is our favorite pizzeria in town and the hands-down winner of our city-wide pizza crawl. Nestled comfortably on a busy stretch of Saint-Zotique Street in Little Italy, this esteemed pizzeria marks the second venture in the Covone family’s growing collection of Italian eateries. With the trifecta of excellent pizza, calamari and gelato, this establishment is actually more of a stellar, all-around Italian ristorante.

Morgane De La Montagne Inc

7
1232, rue de la Montagne, Montréal, QC H3G 1Z1

While most once-trendy places lose steam and end up folding up after a few years, Rosalie has managed to reach the 10-year mark recently. A couple of reinventions and management changes later, this downtown outfit has settled in as a Neapolitan pizzeria, dishing out delicious pies from an imported wood-burning oven.

Mangiafoco

8
105, rue Saint-Paul O, Montréal, QC H2Y 1Z5

A visually stunning eatery that will appeal instantly to design fiends, this modern pizzeria and mozzarella bar boasts a long menu featuring antipasti, various mozzarellas, salads, side dishes and of course Neapolitan pizzas.

Every passing year confirms the death of fine dining as we once knew it.  Small, affordable, made-to-share plates have cut across all cuisines and eased their way into the upper echelon of Montreal’s newcomers for 2017.  Fall may be creeping in on us soon, but there’s still plenty of time to try one of our suggestions below – the places that caught our attention, for better or for worse. It comes as no surprise that Montreal’s local food movement is a force to be reckoned with. As a result, scores of chefs have jumped on the bandwagon; some do it out of an ideological drive, others to satisfy an increasingly demanding and scrutinizing clientele. Montreal’s rich and complex dining scene goes through its fair share of fads and trends every couple years. Of late, we’ve witnessed an explosion in Japanese izakayas, which were followed by Neapolitan pizzerias and more recently taquerias. The following list showcases our city’s various takes on the Mexican staple, from its most traditional form to experimental renditions that are bound to amaze. [Image credit: iStock]
