I always like to support the local cafes in my neighbourhood and Viva on Yew Street is one of my favourites. It’s right by the beach so I usually stop in there with my dog to grab an Americano and a little bite to eat before we go for a long walk. The bakery has great paninis and little sandwiches but they also offer a number of gluten free baked goods as well. They’ve also got a charming little patio that’s a nice spot to sit and is great for people watching.
This brand new Kitsilano market does really good local, organic and seasonal foods. It’s very healthy and it’s right next door to my gym so it’s a convenient spot to eat after a workout. It’s a full grocery store where you can shop for fruits and vegetables along with lots of meals to take home. There’s an on-site café (I love their almond milk lattes) and you can get fresh cold pressed juices from one of my local faves, The Juice Box. They'll also deliver meals and groceries to your door on a bicycle, which I think is really unique!
Most people think of North Vancouver when they think of Thomas Haas, but there’s also a location on West Broadway. He’s known for his artisanal chocolates, of course, but his Kitsilano café has a variety of other baked goods, coffees, teas and lunch options to choose from. If you’re feeling decadent, you can pick up fresh-baked chocolate almond croissants, delicate macarons and sweet cakes and tarts. He also makes this absolutely incredible hot chocolate in three different flavours: classic, dark or Aztec-style, which has a hint of spice.
There are only a few places you can go in Vancouver to get the true flavours of Italy and this little restaurant on the western edge of Kits is definitely the real deal. Chef Adam Pegg is incredible when it comes to traditional northern Italian cooking and his seasonal menu (which changes daily) can be enjoyed a la carte or family-style. Prices are a little steep but it’s worth it for the deliciously authentic Italian cuisine.
When I’m too lazy to cook I always go to Whole Foods to pick up something fast and delicious. The prepared foods area is a great place for grab-and-go dinners and made-to-order take out items. I love the burrito bar, the smoothie station and the make-your-own salad bar. I could go broke there!
