Cake in miniature form and awesome flavours? Who can resist that? Nobody, which is why cupcake shops are so popular in Edmonton. These sweet stops will fulfill all of your cupcake desires.
Located in Sherwood Park, this bakery is all about the cute factor. They do miniature and regular-sized cupcakes in adorable pop culture themes, such as Men are from Mars, Salt ‘N Peppa and Pretty in Pink. The Southern Belle is a lovely red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing, while the Lemony Snicket is a heavenly lemon cake with lemon filling and lemon buttercream icing. They even make custom cupcakes with edible ink photos on them – perfect for parties!
There are so many amazing flavours to choose from here, but Whimsical Cake Studio is mostly known for their delectable vanilla velvet cupcakes. The bakery eschews using the red dye that is common in other red velvet cupcakes, resulting in a creamy vanilla velvet cupcake topped with the cream cheese icing that is at the heart of any good red velvet treat. Other flavours range from spiced carrot cake to chocolate cake with Earl Grey Italian buttercream icing. All of their cupcakes are also available in miniatures.
These might be the best cupcakes in all of Edmonton. Light, fluffy and moist but packed with flavour, picking one flavour over another is basically the dessert equivalent of Sophie’s Choice. Fuss regularly offers six flavours, plus another half-dozen weekly specials. The ultimate choice from the regular menu is the Scarlett O’Hara – red velvet decadence topped with thick cream cheese icing. The specials range from Root Beer Float to The Flawless Carat. All offerings are nut-free.
Cupcakes come in mini, classic and jumbo size here, meaning no matter how much cupcake you want, you can have it. Flirt even offers a few flavours of vegan cupcakes (they’ve even managed to ace vegan buttercream!) and gluten-friendly cupcakes can be ordered in advance. Their namesake cupcake, The Flirt, comes in chocolate or vanilla, with Venezuelan chocolate icing.
This cute little cupcake shop, located just off of Whyte Avenue, is a true gem. They whip up a variety of decadent cupcakes in a ton of flavours, including chocolate and red velvet, and decorate them to look like a dream. They also serve gluten-free cupcakes that taste just as moist and delicious as the regular kind. Their gluten-free red velvet with velvety soft cream cheese icing is a real treat – whether you’re gluten-intolerant or not.
The only thing more adorable than cupcakes are miniature cupcakes. Not only do they look cute enough for a toddler’s tea party, but their petite stature allows you to try multiple flavours without blowing your diet. While Minibites Cupcakes does also make regular size cupcakes, the adorable factor of the mini ones will win you over (as will the fact that you can get them to bake in a chocolate kiss or peanut butter cup in the middle of your cupcake).
