Hanukkah is an opportunity to celebrate the festival of lights with family and friends. Here are some ideas for hosting an affordable and easy-to-plan Hanukkah party.
Begin early by making the delicious potato pancakes (known as latkes) and storing them in the freezer. Consider adding in shredded carrots to the potato mix to make them sweeter and enhance the overall flavour. On the day of the party, prepare the feast, but keep it simple. Serve braised brisket cooked in a brown sugar sauce, surrounded by seasonal root vegetables, like carrots and yams. In addition to the brisket, prepare traditional favourites like kugel, asparagus or broccoli sprinkled with butter and lemon juice. And of course, you can't forget challah bread (raisins optional).
Take a look at other Hanukkah recipes that are both delicious and easy to make. If home cooking isn't your style, consider outsourcing the meal to a kosher restaurant in your area.
Many families will have a family heirloom menorah that serves as the centrepiece of the celebration (light a candle for each of Hannukah's eight nights). Classic Hanukkah decorations, from distinctive blue and gold cloth table throws and napkins, to Star of David china plates, can crop up anywhere from vintage shops to big retail chains to online. Also keep your eyes peeled for inexpensive, kid-friendly decorations like Happy Hanukkah banners, and Star of David wreaths, plates and cups. With festive white, gold, and blue colours, these pieces will get everyone into the holiday spirit.
Plan an activity for each of the eight Hanukkah nights; consider cooking a big family meal together, hosting a game night, or throwing a full party with activities for both kids and adults. For a great party, start by making gift bags full of small Hanukkah-themed games, treats and colouring books to distribute to the kids at the beginning of the night. Older kids and teenagers can help set up the decorations and games while the younger kids colour pictures of the menorah or the Star of David. Once everything is assembled, the whole family can enjoy a fun night of games and activities. You can purchase popular Hanukkah party games at a party store, or create your own with homemade awards and trophies for the winners. Finally, consider making the last night extra special by purchasing a piñata filled with Hanukkah treats and initiating a family sing-along.
