If you're looking to find the entrance to The Narrow, it might take some doing. But, as manager Rachel Zottenberg notes, that's part of its charm; since it opened in 2008, the intimate, 40-seat lounge has built its reputation on a cheeky sort of secrecy. Above the entrance is a single red bulb, and the interior is reminiscent of a prohibition-era speakeasy, featuring ornate wallpaper, mounted animal heads, classic cocktails, decadent food, spot-on music and plenty of nooks and crannies.
“With no sign on the front door — nothing to tell you that you're in the right spot other than a little red light, it's pretty hidden,” Rachel chuckles. “And what we've found is that it's become a really great word-of-mouth place. People know they're going to like it because they've heard about it from a friend. And as a result, our regulars have grown quite organically. It's always a friend of a friend of a friend.”
One of Vancouver’s worst kept secrets, The Narrow Lounge is accessible via a side door off Main Street and down a set of graffiti-scrawled stairs. Here underground, an intimate space with room for no more than 30 people greet the brave and in-the-know. Leather booths, dark lighting, an LP player, and antique paintings of Old Vancouver create a snug atmosphere. The drinks list is extensive, from cocktails to wine to beer, while a limited menu of hot and cold food will prevent you from having to leave this perfect burrow for hours (I recommend the nachos). A winter essential.
Like a proper speakeasy, The Narrow Lounge is well hidden behind an unmarked door at the corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue. The only hint that something lies beyond is a red light above the door – when it’s on, the bar is open. Once you’ve found it, make your way down the stairs to this dimly lit little hideout for good times and excellent cocktails like the Narrow Caesar, Rum Horchata and Bourbon Sour. During the summer months they open a mini “Mexican fiesta patio” where Mount Pleasant hipsters enjoy the warm weather.
Mount Pleasant’s not-so-secret Narrow Lounge is known for its namesake – and its delicious whiskeys. This very, very narrow bar’s mysterious atmosphere is evocative of a private London club. If you’re having trouble finding the bar’s non-descript entrance, look for the red light emitting from the doorway, and follow the smells of whiskey within; dozens of varieties are available here.
