Family run, cosy atmosphere, very friendly, feels like family. Great service in very clean restaurant. Been going since 2000, and have never had anything but great quality. Once you have had their light crisp batter that's not greasy and their homemade French fries you won't go anywhere else.
I am a big fish and chips eater and I would good ANYWHERE to find a good fish and chips place. There are too few places that can deliver such high quality food. The prices for halibut has skyrocketed due to high demands, because customers like us DEMAND It. Sadly, we are to blame for killing off the halibuts, they now have become a rarity like lobsters and king crabs. The halibut here are REAL halibut and not some fish from the family. If you are willing to pay the price, it is well worth it.
I'm no fish and chip expert but I had the halibut and it was good! The fries were excellent. Not a huge difference in taste between the $8 haddock and the $12 halibut but to each his own. I didn't like the mushy peas but I've never had mushy peas before so maybe I just don't like mushy peas. Friendly staff but I've got to say, the only thing Scottish in the Tartan is the bagpipes on the wall.
Have known Helen, Sam and their daughters ever since they opened the Tartan and have eaten there, picked up from there and whichever way you eat it it is BRILLIANT....The best. The place is immaculate, we're always served with a smile, The only complaint I have to date (and just recently) not serving Mushy Peas anymore - they were almost as good as homemade and certainly the best in Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga area.
This is by far the best fish and chip restaurant in Oakville. The fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection and accompanied by an ample supply of old fashioned really good chips. The service is exceptional and the place is spotless. The atmosphere exudes quality, freshness - somewhat of a rarity these days.
A cozy family runs business successfully serving high quality fish and seafood for over 10 years. The owners make no compromises when it come to their food only the best for their customers. Wild, not farmed Pacific Halibut. The fish isn't greasy, but light and fluffy. The service was charming and they made you feel welcomed. I will definitely be a regular customer. I've never had such great fish and the coleslaw is mouthwatering too.
Tartans is not the easiest place to find, but following the crowd will get you there. After looking at the map and getting lost for a bit, we enter—and find ourselves in the middle of a busy night at the restaurant. Being on a budget, me and the buddies set out to order the most delicious dish at the lowest possible cost. I order up the basic dish of fish and chips. It is well stacked, loaded with natural flavour. The verdict: the fillet was without-artificial-flavour, it was simple and delicious. The food came out at a quick pace. Overall very good, especially compared to nearby fish and chips restaurants.
I have been to this restaurant ever since the very beginning. Tartan's opened April 1998, and have been a regular customer ever since. One thing I feel made this restaurant successful are the hard working owners. Sam and Helen had been running this joint for the past 10 years, and they strive nothing but excellence on their fish and chips. The fish are approximately 4oz and the batter is always crispy. Chips vary from season to season, but overall, always good. For the past 10 years, I've tasted the same fish and chips, and it hasn't changed one bit, just the way i like it.
Tartan has the best quality of food that I had ever eaten. You can't put a price on good food. It's really hard to find a really good restaurant with high quality of food. The fries were really crispy and so was the batter. There were ACTUAL halibut fish underneath the batter. Also, there is a wide selection of pops.
The best fish and chips place I have ever been to. The fish comes out nice and hot in batter that was fried golden. And the fries like you wouldn't believe. It was nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The fish is nice and soft, perfectly cooked and the batter isn't too heavy, so that it is not all batter and little fish. The decor of the place is nice, there are pictures by young patrons decorating the walls and two awards from the local town paper along side a newspaper clipping of the owner of the restaurant. Along the far wall are two kilts and bagpipes. There is a nice comfortable feeling, makes you linger even after your meal.
This is the best fish & chips in the area. Fish is tempura-like crispy and well drained, the chips are a good length and well cooked and the fish portion used to be at least 6 oz. I have been a faithfull customer for several years until recently. All of a sudden - not only smaller fish, but higher price at the same time. I would prefer the higher price or why not sell different sizes at different prices?? These people think they are fooling you, but what used to be lineups out the door on Fridays has now dwindled. I may be back, but for now I am exploring what is is out there.
