Please do not forget about the popcorn! So many amazing memories from the past and the discovery of the new that Port Stanley is so willing to share. Thank you Mackie's and the People. Dear potential food seeker-please treat the Staff with the respect they deserve by saying "Please and Thank You". P.S. Do not engage the Seagalls.
Have loved Mackies since I was a kid and still do. I just wish I could buy their secret sauce by the bottle and take some home with me.
Loved Mackies as a kid, so took our family there. Quite disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips - and when it came, dismayed to find it was two quite small fillets ( about the size of a large cigarette lighter each) placed on top of a pile of over cooked, bland fries. What fish we did get was unseasoned and quite tasteless. I know beach side eateries are as much about the location as the food, but I could not help feeling quite dissatisfied by the small portions. Maybe they were having an off day, but I doubt we will be back.
I have great memories of Port Stanley in the 50's: hot dogs, fries, orangeade and tonnes of fun by the water. It isn't quite the same today, but Mackie's keeps a bit of the fond memories alive for old guys like me. The place is kept amazingly clean and the lady who owns/manages the place is always very friendly. And the Orangeade hasn't changed a bit :)
They are famous for those items. I wasn't ever there as a kid so I can't compare to the "old days" but its a family tradition to go each summer.
It is not what it use to be. We had hamburges, fries and orange drink. Hamburger was middle of the road. I think the fries were left over from the night before and had been reheated a few times in the oil. The orange drink was orange water. From the days I remembered as a kid going there it has slipped down. At one time we use to make a special trip London to Mackies just for the fries and orange aide.
This place is somewhere I go ever summer im in port. I know some people get mad because they do tend to take a hour to get you food (sarcasim) but I understand it. there are so many people on the beach everyday there you cant expect a short line. However thats about the only bad thing. This place has amazing food, fun for the kids and I love that its right on the beach. When i was little this was one of my summer highlights Mackie sauce :). if you want some great food eat here.
We basically go here for the fry sauce. Wish I could duplicate it at home so I wouldn't have to pay $20 for 2 fries and 2 watered down orangeades and a teeny weeny hot dog that my husband polishes off in 2 bites. Seems a little ridiculous.... but the sauce is that good. We like going to Port Stanley and will probably return to Mackie's but more and more we are trying more places to eat in the area.
My son and daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren and I were in Port Stanley on Tuesday. I insisted upon going to Mackie's because I remembered going there as a child and also bringing my own children there when they were young. They used to have foot-long hotdogs and the best orangeade ever. Extremely disappointing! No more foot-longs, and the orangeade seemed watered down. The fries weren't very good either, and the small hotdogs were no better. What happened? New management cheaped out or something. They have shot themselves in the foot. If it weren't for the location of the place, I would probably not return.
The food is amazing! You're at the beach so stop complaining about young kids running around, and the noise! (It's not fine dinning and if that's what you're looking for you went to the wrong place!) I have loved Mackies since the first time I went.. When I was like 3!
We arrived looking to try the fries and that famous sauce since we had been in town but they don't take debit or credit cards. We left to find an ATM (at mac's a mile away) and returned to notice that they have one of those $4 ATM's in the corner...would have been nice to know since the girl at the counter said she didn't know where in town to find one. The fries took a while but were kind of good, the wild screaming children running all over were kind of hard to not trip on. In my opinion the place is kind of a run down hole cafeteria with a bunch of old (but not good) video games, half of which were out of order.
Mackies has the best fries and the most AMAZING secret fry sauce in the world. The orangaid is soooooo good!
I love to eat food, i like mackies reminds me of old country, i love theee frys there are good,eh?
