i was working at a near by hospital and needed a quick late night dinner. i decided to go here instead of tim hortons. what a mistake. for just under $8, u got general pao chicken. i had to pay extra for rice, which apparently made it a combo, but with no drink . the guy at the cash seemed annoyed by my questions, which was if the chicken came with rice and a couple other general questions. when i opened it up, about 75% of the dish was rice, with a small amount of chicken. the chicken itself was alright. i've def had better. the pieces of chicken where cut pretty big and was shaped very abnormal, which made me skeptical about whether or not i was eatin chicken, seriously. it wasnt even easy to eat when you have huge chunks of chicken to work with. overall, i wasted my money on rice and it didnt fill me up at all. i should have stuck with tim hortons.
Have been going to this place for over 10 years only because I absolutely love their spicy squid, but after today's incident I don't know if I'll ever go back there. They served the 2 people I was with, but kept me waiting for my meal. After my friends had finished their meals, and mine still hadn't arrived (20 minutes) I had to get up to the front and ask about my order. The waiter just said "I don't know...I'm busy" I understand that restaurants get busy during lunch rushes, but people who had arrived 20 minutes after us were getting their food, while I was just sitting there like a chump. Finally, after waiting so long without food that I now had to get back to work from my lunch break...the squid finally arrives. (My friend had ordered it as an app...I had ordered it as an entree). Being as furious as I was, I didn't want the order anymore and refused to pay for it, while my friend decided to get his to go. The waiter was in-sincerely apologetic, and said he's give us both orders to go for the price of one. Much to my dismay, upon getting home and opening up the take out container, only one order was given to us. So mad. Don't go here if you're expecting a good dining experience. The place is also riddled with cops.
good food (steaming hot), good food portions, good service (friendly staff), clean atmosphere. It's crowded during dinner hours on weekends.
Fast service, great food. The service is so fast it almost makes you question the food; but food is steaming hot and tastes great. Serving sizes are huge. They deliver after 6 which is a definite plus when working in the downtown area. We always go after a club since they're open late. Overall, great place to be. You have to order the shrimp fried rice with shrimp spring rolls - the rolls are crispy and addictive, and the rice is golden brown and just the right texture. Their sweet and sour chicken is amazing too; it comes with pineapples, onions, and peppers.
I visited Toronto the last weekend in August of this year, to see the Exhibition; while shopping in the Dundas region, I thought this restaurant looked nice, so I decided to stop there for lunch. When I ordered Lunch For One #1, at an economical $11.95, I was expecting a modest sampler apprropriate to the price - what I got was a pot of steaming hot chamomile tea, a bowl of steaming hot soup, a hot and crisp full-sized eggroll, and an ENORMOUS plate of fried rice, chicken chow mein, and half a dozen tennis ball-sized fried chicken balls with a side bowl of sweet and sour dipping sauce!! AND a fortune cookie!! I couldn't even finish the meal, but everything was absolutely delicious! The service was wonderful, too! I CAN'T WAIT to dine here again on my next visit to Toronto!!!
Excellent food at reasonable prices. Cant help going back again and again! A Definate recommend for great food. Love the steamed fish and their chiili chicken! Must try!
Hong Shing's food was absolutely amazing, especially the Spicy Shrimp. It was really hot and a lot of water was needed, but the servers were on top of everything, even at 3am! Not being from Toronto (but a regular visitor for work), we simply asked the cab driver to take us to the best chinese restaurant downtown after the bar, and he did not disappoint us. I think the fact that the cab took us there says a lot about the popularity of Hong Shing for the after-bar crowd, and I'll hopefully be back within the next few weeks.
Hong Shing is one of those late night Chinese gems. I'm actually quite surprised no one mentioned their signature dish yet - Spicy Chili Chicken. Some days you can go and it will have a bit of a bite, but on others it can cause your face to fall off. The food is great (I've had countless dishes from there), service, well, its what you would expect from a China Town restaurant, place your order, no substitutions. The only negative thing I can say about this place is don't get a glass of water, it smells like a dirty rag! I believe this is because they sanitize their glasses when they are still wet they put them upside down.
From all the times I've been here food has been enjoyable most of the time. Fried Rices are pretty good, decent helping, and cheap! I used consider going to Hong Shing all the time, but there has been a streak of bad service. Always seem to be in a bad mood, and maybe try to be too nice that it seems mocking? Once the waiter just stood over us while we payed the bill. Only reason i go there now is because they are open late! There are better chinese resturaunts on dundas to go to during the day.
awesome for low budget - fine tasting quality food that comes in massive quantities. If you are a student, get some meat or veggie dish on rice and keep it for lunch and dinner (trust me its enough). Dont expect high class service from a budget restaurent! Place is pretty clean and tables well maintained. Highly recommend. ALso its proly the few places open till 5 am on university and dundas area. cheers guys
I love the food at this restaurant. I order take out for lunch. I have dinner on site frequently. I'd encourage everyone to try their food.
Everything is amazing. The staff is so helpful. Spicy shrimp out of this world. Nice clean atmosphere
