A sushi place just like any other sushi places easily found on Bloor St. West. Large portion, especially sushi, BUT too much rice with too small fish on it. I cannot understand what the fuzz is about.
If you are hungry and broke, yes.
If not, no.
It's more like busy Chinese restaurant with food mimicking Japanese sushi.
I've been going to Sushi on Bloor for over 5 years now. The food, price and service all make for a very busy restaurant. Now that they have expanded to 2 levels, they can hold more patrons however there is always a line up during the evenings and weekends. I love their dragon rolls and soft shell crab rolls. Their portions are very generous and the staff are very fast to serve you.
The sushi portions are quite large and should be a bit smaller so they are bite size, but despite that they are quite good! The butterfish sashimi is my favorite, and tastes very fresh. The atmosphere is a little bit cramped in, which is my only complain. I left satisfied. :)
Very average sushi, even by north-american standards, why the crowd? Nothing special, neither good nor bad, but the amount of people lining up makes it a worse experience because it's hard to find a table. Hype.
Why the bad reviews?
This isn't Japanese sushi. (Lived there for 5 years and have a Japanese partner.)
1) The fish was okay, but the portions were WAY to big. (Should be a comfortable mouthful.)
2) They PACK the rice too much and the rice was too hard. It makes each piece very heavy.
3) The maki wasn't round.
4) The rice was still hot and thus heated the fish.
5) The dumplings were too oily.
Seeing all the people I had been looking forward to going there. I was dissapointed. This was the worst sushi I have had in Toronto as of yet.
Personally, I hope the owner reads this review and makes changes.
I don't understand the negative reviews. Went for an early dinner, we were seated within about 10 minutes. Food was quick to arrive and really fantastic. My husband and I are vegetarian, so it's refreshing to have a large selection of foods to choose from. Everything was delicious, and the portions were huge. We couldn't believe it as the food kept coming and coming. $35 (taxes in) for both of us, including a small sake. Will definitely be going again, and recommending to others.
Sushi on Bloor: one word = OVERRATED.
This is absolutely without a doubt, the worst Japanese restaurant that I've been in the history of my life! Service = terrible, rude, unkeen and reluctant to help, the restaurant being busy has nothing to do with horrible service me and my family has receieved!
Food = mediocore, = it took forever to come, and the quality was less than impressive... tasted NOT FRESH for the sashimi, we were starving, the food looked like rubber and tasted like rubber. The atmosphere is in desperate need of a makeover and greatly intereferes with the dining experience, but thankfully, sushi on bloor has a great spectacular package, All food, service, atmosphere is way BELOW any Japanese Restaurant's standards. Also, is it even worth the LONG WAIT over a terrible restaurant like this one? Overall, I urge the public to avoid this terrible restaurant, as you will be apalled, and the their food is absolutely disgusting compared to other places on BLoor. The waitress should seriously keep it CUTE(personality and attitude) or put it on MUTE.
Sushi on Bloor is the only sushi restaurant I visit! Fish is super fresh, prices are best in town, portions are HUGE. Great value. I agree the staff isn't the friendliest, but just do takeout and you don't have to deal with them. There's even a 20% discount on takeout, which makes it the cheapest (and best!) in town.
Horrible appetizers. I think when the fish gets too old to serve as sushi...they serve it as a cooked appetizer! Don't get the tuna! or the soft-shell crab! A few others were bad too. Service horrible as usual. Actually sat aisans who spoke in their native language first and we called ahead with a reservation!...is this even legal??? I've been several times, and it just keeps getting worse! From now on I'm going to - - just down the street.

there waiters and waitresses there were just bunch of people who r those ipod only got buttons!! indicating no response at all i hd waited abt 44 mins 45 sec for two bendo box take out which i been told it wld only take 20 mins maximum

Service is not bad, compared to prison. I guess they won't beat us up in this restaurant. Otherwise it's pretty much the same.
Food is big, and that's it. It's not that cheap, and more often than not you will get sick after eating there.
DO NOT LEAVE ANY TIP BECAUSE THEY DON'T DESERVE IT. Or you can probably leave $0.01 as a sign of protest.
Don't get fooled by the long line-up. Go to some other places.

The food was the best Japanese food I have ever had. They gave us a dish called "sushi pizza" free of charge. The service was excellent although even with a reservation, it might take up to 30 minutes just to get a seat. (yes, its that crowded, even on a weeknight)
Overall the experience was great especially the free ice cream dessert in the end!!! Will come back soon

The service is usually fast but not friendly, and all the waiters seem stressed. The place is packed by 6:00 even on weekdays. Go early or make a reservation, or wait in line for ages. Definitely worth it though.

If you are looking for good sushi for a reasonable price this is the place...if you are looking for a romantic qiet dinner and exceptional service then this place isn'tit.

This restaurant has the best sashimi I've tasted, with the best price I've seen, but it comes with very poor service! Expect to wait and sometimes even fight for a table. This time I waited 1hr 15min before I got a table, had to remind the waiter about our order after having placed the order about 30mins prior. Its too bad such great food has to be paired up with such poor service.

Cons: the restaurant is too small and short staffed to accomodate all their customers! The waitresses are so busy they are rude, in a rush, and barky.
Expect 1hr (or more) wait at any time. Lineups out the door no matter what time of day you go. Even at night because it's so cheap and there is a univeristy nearby.
