Guillaume Filion and Dominic St. Laurent had known each other for years when they decided to open LeBallpark on Clark Street. They had worked together a few times previously, including at Enfants Terribles and the Outremont branch of the Pizzaiole restaurant.
With their combined wealth of experience and driven by a desire to focus on a project that would be more personal to them, the business partners opened LeBallpark in December 2013. As Guillaume recalls, "For some time, I'd wanted to start my own tranquil project in Montreal to be more independent and bring my own vision to life. Meanwhile, as I was thinking about how to make it all happen, I was at university doing a BA in business and management. I think that consolidated my skills and gave me a bit more self-assurance to go for it."
The co-owners fell in love with a building located in the Mile End neighbourhood of Montreal. The space's generous windows, among other reasons, had them hooked. During the renovations, they respected the initial structure and dividing walls, but expanded the rounded arches to make the most of the outstanding light. In doing so, they revealed the old beams of a load-bearing wall that they kept exposed in all its bare and worn-wood beauty.
Guillaume says the massive bar from which diners can keep an eye on the kitchen, was built from scratch. He admits to having had the invaluable help of his girlfriend, who is a designer. "Although I can say without hesitation that Dominic and I had the ideas for the décor, I do have to thank my incredibly talented and resourceful girlfriend. Shereally allowed us to bring our ideas to life by selecting the best materials in the right colour, and so on."
